The Materials
After exploring gold leaf and metallic pigments on canvas and wood
for the better part of a decade, I began in 2005 to use anodized
aluminum as my painting surface. The first piece on metal (Four
Seasons) incorporated my last technique, layers of powdered mica
glazed with oil paint, to produce an abstract work with a pristine
surface. After working for years to achieve this surface, it
was now a given, and my interest shifted to the question of how
to use this beautiful silver panel in a new way. I found that
the application of paint on the metal created a wonderful drawing
environment. For years my work has been horizon based, so there
was internal consistency in a turn toward the more realistic
landscape.
My newest work is a second suite of paintings in the series "Along
t he Five", generated from imagination influenced by countless
trips between Oakland and Los Angeles along Highway 5, fields,
orchards, stands of trees rushing by. |
